| Abstract | Building Information Modeling (BIM) has emerged as a transformative technology in the construction industry, offering numerous benefits to various stakeholders involved in the project lifecycle. openBIM, an extension of BIM, further revolutionizes the construction landscape by promoting collaboration and interoperability among diverse stakeholders, ensuring seamless data exchange and optimizing project outcomes. This dissertation aims to investigate the obstacles and opportunities associated with the implementation of openBIM specifically within the field of AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) in Hong Kong. Through an extensive literature review, the study examines the current state of openBIM implementation in AEC practices and identifies the key challenges faced by professionals in Hong Kong. Additionally, the research explores the potential opportunities that openBIM presents for enhancing efficiency, accuracy, and collaboration. Secondary data, including industry reports, academic publications, and case studies, will mainly be used for analysis. This secondary data will provide a broad context and deep insights into the current trends and best practices in openBIM implementation for AEC industry in Hong Kong. The findings of this study will contribute to a deeper understanding of the obstacles that hinder openBIM implementation, as well as the potential opportunities that can be harnessed to overcome these challenges. The research outcomes will provide initiatives to promote the effective adoption of openBIM in AEC industry.
