AbstractThis dissertation delves into the issue of online scams through online dating apps in Hong Kong. It investigates the user fraud detection process and victimization prevention strategies employed by dating platform users. By interviewing users of online dating apps who are nearly being deceived by scammers, it is expected to find out the following three findings: (1) What strategies do users employ to prevent being victims of online dating scams in Hong Kong? (2) How do users deal with psychological and emotional discomfort after near scams and choose to continue using dating apps? (3) How do users deal with psychological and emotional discomfort after near scams and choose to continue using dating apps? In addition, Routine Activity Theory (RAT) and Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) will be utilized in this research as the theoretical frameworks to analyze our findings on fraud detection processes and victimization prevention strategies on online dating applications by genuine users.
