AbstractObjective: This study explores the impact of Problematic Instagram Use (PIU) on psychological distress, specifically focusing on symptoms of depression and anxiety, and investigates the mediating role of Contingent Self-Worth based on Social Approval (CSWSA) in this relationship. Method: A total of 121 participants, aged between 18 and 29, participated in this study. They completed a self-reported questionnaire that assessed problematic Instagram use, levels of depression and anxiety, as well as contingent selfworth in the domain of other’s approval. Results: Findings revealed a significant positive correlation between PIU, depression, anxiety, as well the mediating factor CSW-SA. Furthermore, mediation analyses demonstrated that CSW-SA fully mediated the relationship between PIU and depression, as well as between PIU and anxiety. Conclusion: This study highlights the detrimental impact of PIU on mental health and emphasizes the importance of interventions promoting healthier self-evaluation and reducing reliance on external validation in the digital age.
