Abstract | This research project aims to investigate the impact of studying abroad on Chinese university students' attitudes towards cannabis and related policies. Compared with mainland students, overseas students have a greater degree of exposure to cannabis. There are many relevant factors that may influence attitudes towards cannabis among overseas students, including social interaction, unrestricted social media influence, street culture, easier access to cannabis, legalization of cannabis, financial affluence, and more. This study used a mixed methods approach to investigate Chinese students' attitudes toward cannabis and related policies and the influencing factors. Quantitative data from 96 Chinese university students, both domestic and overseas, was analyzed using SPSS, employing descriptive statistics and T-tests. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five Chinese students studying abroad, and a thematic analysis was conducted to explore their in-depth attitudes and views on cannabis and related policies. By examining how exposure to different cultural and legal contexts influences their perceptions, attitudes, and knowledge regarding cannabis, the study seeks to provide insights into the potential influence of studying abroad on drug-related attitudes and policy preferences.
