AbstractIn recent years, the number of fraudulent incidents involving mainland Chinese students studying in Hong Kong has increased. Based on our 468 questionnaire survey findings of mainland students studying in Hong Kong, there is not a simple linear correlation between increased online shopping activities per month and increased online fraud victimization. However, there are statistically significant linear correlations with those who engage in online loans or those who fail to install anti-fraud apps, with increased frequency of encountering online shopping frauds. In other words, those who take out online loans are linked to a higher risk of becoming victims of fraud, whereas those who download fraud prevention apps are less likely to fall victim to online shopping frauds. Routine Activity Theory (RAT) is employed as a valuable analytical tool in our research to analyze our findings. Some limitations of applying RAT to analyze online shopping scams will also be discussed.
