Abstract | This dissertation investigates why intimate partner violence (IPV) increased in China during the COVID-19 epidemic, focusing on the impact of factors such as increased stress due to the epidemic, social isolation, and cultural attitudes. Using a multidisciplinary approach, the study provides an in-depth analysis of how cultural, structural, and institutional factors support and exacerbate domestic violence. The thesis critically examines traditional gender roles, legal prevention mechanisms, as well as economic and political influences of the pandemic.
Research has found that the increase in domestic violence during the epidemic is due to the overlapping of multiple factors, including inequality between men and women, awareness of authority, and the influence of legal as well as cultural norms. The thesis focuses on significant barriers in the justice system and proposes reform strategies, pointing out the urgency of legal reform, refreshing public awareness, and strengthening support systems for IPV victims.
Eventually, it concludes that to effectively respond to partner violence and promote gender equality, a comprehensive strategy needs to be adopted, including strengthening public awareness, providing economic assistance, strengthening legal protection, and establishing an efficient support system. Dismantling patriarchal attitudes through legal and social reforms is key to promoting gender equality. Taken together, these measures can effectively prevent and respond to intimate partner violence, especially during a global crisis like COVID-19.
