AbstractThis research aims to explore the impact of mainland students in Hong Kong universities experiencing telecom fraud on their behavior to report such incidents, with a focus on the moderating role played by the degree of students’ knowledge of anti-fraud information. The independent variable (IV) is the degree of exposure to telecom fraud, while the dependent variable (DV) is the reporting tendency of telecom fraud. The moderating variable under investigation is the degree of knowledge of anti-fraud information among university students. The study employs a mixed-methods approach by incorporating both qualitative and quantitative methods for data collection and analysis. The 184 participants (comprising 95 females and 89 males.) in this research are undergraduate and postgraduate students from the University of Hong Kong. The results of both the questionnaires and interviews supported the hypothesis that mainland students in Hong Kong universities who have a higher degree of exposure to telecom fraud are more likely to exhibit a higher reporting tendency of telecom fraud incidents. Besides, the study also evidenced that the higher the level of understanding of anti-fraud information among mainland students in Hong Kong universities, the higher their tendency to report telecommunications fraud incidents. While the results didn’t support the third hypothesis that the degree of such university students’ knowledge of anti-fraud information moderates the positive relationship between their exposure to telecom fraud and their reporting tendency, a new possible moderate factor, namely the length of time staying in Hong Kong, had been identified. There is also an interesting finding in the interviews which suggested that the lack of knowledge on telecom fraud might increase the tendency of the students to report to their friends while the reporting behaviors to others remained similar to the prediction of hypotheses.
