AbstractThe intangible cultural heritage (ICH), encompassing traditional skills, folk culture, and traditional festivals, holds significant value within the traditional culture of a country or region. The enthusiastic engagement of young people, serving as custodians of this heritage, is crucial for preserving the historical lineage and strengthening cultural confidence. However, as time progresses, there are indications that young people's appreciation for ICH is diminishing, and their interest is waning. Young individuals assume diverse roles in the realm of ICH, ranging from superficial engagement as mere spectators to becoming informed audiences and active practitioners. Facilitating this process necessitates the collaboration of multiple stakeholders, including the education sector and the government. This thesis will utilize the UNESCO 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage as a foundational framework and employ the Nanyin in Fujian as a case study to examine strategies for effectively involving young people in the preservation and promotion of ICH. Nanyin, a traditional form of music originating from southern Fujian Province, is renowned as a "living relic of Chinese music history" and holds a longstanding status as ICH. Despite its cultural significance, it has been observed that the involvement of young people in safeguarding and promoting ICH has experienced a decline in recent years. This thesis comprehensively examines the patterns of youth engagement and participation in Nanyin at both the international and local levels in Fujian. Through interviews and questionnaires, and in-depth investigation identifies the underlying factors contributing to the diminishing interest among young individuals in Nanyin and delves into exploring potential avenues for revitalizing youth engagement with ICH. Additionally, the thesis explores potential strategies for revitalizing youth engagement with ICH. In conclusion, a thorough assessment evaluates the possible prospects and challenges entailed in implementing the proposed measures.
