Abstract“As one lamp lights another, nor grows less, so nobleness enkindleth nobleness.” -- Representative quote of the Maryknoll Spirit Since the promulgation of the 1979 ‘Burra Charter’, there has been a noticeable shift in the global perspective on heritage conservation, increasingly acknowledging the significance of intangible and social values. However, the subjective and intangible nature of social value poses a sophisticated challenge for its effective assessment, incorporation and articulation in heritage conservation practices. Even though there have been more discussions and emphasis on social value in the recent decade, there is still a lack of widespread recognition for social value in Hong Kong (HK), preventing it from being on par with historical and architectural values. Maryknoll Convent School (MCS), with her long history of establishment and unique school campus, is a declared monument in HK. She is reaching her centenary of establishment in a year’s time. Yet, her only recognised social value in the heritage assessment prepared by Antiquities and Monuments Office in 2008 is just being a landmark in the district. There are a lot more social value to be identified and recognised. Through literature research, site visits, online questionnaire and qualitative interviews, the aim of this thesis is to explore and unveil the social value of MCS using social value guiding principles formed with reference from internationally recognized charters and literature. Considered as a landmark and local marker in daily life, MCS is valued and protected by a community. Her association with HK society transcends utilitarian value, demonstrating a broader impact. Responding continuously to societal needs, the Maryknoll Sisters’ have made significant contribution to education, welfare for women and children, medical care, catechetical and social work. Throughout the centenary, shared memories and feelings, identity and pride have developed. Although social value is contemporary, the MCS community has the same goal to not only protect and conserve the fabric, but also to pass on Sisters’ teachings and core values. The Maryknoll Spirit has been sustained and inherited from the past till and the present, and to future generations. This research explores and consolidates the social value of a historically significant school, creating possibilities and inspirations for further social value studies and discussions regarding the heritage conservation of HK. It is also hoped to contribute to MCS’s centenary celebration, to always carry on the Maryknoll Spirit to home, to country, and to the world.
