Book Chapter: Queer Hong Kong as a Sinophone Method

TitleQueer Hong Kong as a Sinophone Method
Authors
Issue Date17-Sep-2024
Abstract

My chapter contributes to queer theory and Sinophone studies through debating Hong Kong modernity and the universalism of queer theory. It draws on the analytical potential of feminism and queer theory for alternative structures of feeling. In my queer Sinophone comparative method, feminist solidarity during the Asia-Pacific War, lesbian intimacy among working-class women workers in the 1960s, trans-regional lesbian intimacy, and queer inter-racial desire at the backdrop of multiple empires altogether envision thick textures of affective histories. By turning to these queer modes of affective history, queer Hong Kong as a Sinophone method demonstrates how non-normative desire and queer affect are in fact constitutive of Hong Kong modernity itself.
