Book Chapter: Transgenderism as a Heuristic Device: On the Cross-historical and Transnational Adaptations of the Legend of the White Snake

TitleTransgenderism as a Heuristic Device: On the Cross-historical and Transnational Adaptations of the Legend of the White Snake
Authors
Issue Date11-Dec-2012
Abstract

This essay engages with the charge of anachronism in queer historical analysis by deconstructing the category of "transgender" in the case of literary and cinematic adapations across time, space, and genre. I unpack the Ming dynasty folklore The Legend of the White Snake as a particularly queer case of cross-historical and transnational adapations in queer Sinophone cultures.
