Abstract | Sarcopenia is clinically defined as a syndrome characterised by progressive and generalised loss of skeletal muscle mass and muscle function (either low muscle strength or physical performance) with a risk of adverse outcomes such as physical disability, poor quality of life and death. Sarcopenia can be viewed from a pathophysiologic perspective as an organ failure (“muscle insufficiency”) which can develop chronically or acutely associated with hospitalisation. In this review, the treatment and prevention of chronic sarcopenia, as well as the prevention and treatment of acute sarcopenia secondary to hospitalisation is discussed. |
