Abstract

As a high-risk and innovation-driven form of financing, venture capital (VC) serves as a natural filter of high-quality startups, facilitating entrepreneurship development. By leveraging 102,388 VC investment events from 2000 to 2022, we reveal the uneven geography of China's VC investments using two cartograms of VC regional market size and a chord diagram depicting the cross-regional pattern of VC investment flows. Our findings demonstrate a concentration of VC investments in major urban agglomerations and significant geographic disparities across the country. This visualisation marks a starting point to explore the underlying mechanism of regional divergence in VC financial market and VC-backed entrepreneurship.
