AbstractAim: To investigate the effects of anisaldehyde, anethole and cinnamaldehyde on the in vitro percutaneous permeation of 5-fluorouracil (5-YU). Method: The percutaneous permeation of 5-FU was investigated in hairless mouse skin after application of cinnamaldehyde, anethole, or anisaldehyde with ethanol or propylene glycol (PG) using a diffusion cell technique. Result: The above volatile constituents (2%, w/v) in combination with 20% ethanol or 30% PG significantly increased the permeability coefficient of 5-FU (P < 0.01) in comparison with the control. Conclusion: Anisaldehyde, anethole and cinnamaldehyde in combination with ethanol or propylene glycol can be used to enhance the percutaneous absorption of 5-FU.
