Abstract | The Hong Kong Detective Fu'yi Mosi (2 volumes, abbreviated as "The Hong Kong Detective" afterwards) is a pastiche of Sherlock Holmes stories written by Hong Kong author Trevor Michael Morris in the past two years. The story is set in late Qing Dynasty Hong Kong, and tells the story of the famous detective Fu'yi Mosi, from Manchuria, and the doctor Huasheng, from Fuzhou, solving twelve cases between 1881 and 1894. Both the main characters and the plot cleverly correspond to Conan Doyle's original Sherlock Holmes stories, but are also deeply rooted in local culture, interweaving the history and anecdotes of late Qing Dynasty Hong Kong, and showcasing the city's unique blend of Eastern and Western characteristics. This article analyzes the use of sound and the writing of late Qing Dynasty Hong Kong's social history in "The Hong Kong Detective" stories. The article is divided into four parts: the first part discusses the contemporary context of adapting Sherlock Holmes stories and provides an overview of the creation of "The Hong Kong Detective". The second and third parts respectively discuss the use of sound and social history in the specific works. The fourth part is the conclusion. |
