Conference Paper: Housing Water: Entangled histories of a composite building and the environment, 1960s-1970s

TitleHousing Water: Entangled histories of a composite building and the environment, 1960s-1970s

Issue Date15-Dec-2022
Abstract

This paper investigates a water supply episode surrounding a composite building in Kowloon, Hong Kong. The continuing existence of the mid-century massive composite buildings attests to the in-situ preservation of Hong Kong’s modern architecture vernacular. As they harbor their past in monumental silence, few are cognizant of their histories, the principles of those who struggled against their coming into being, and the confrontations within and around them. Examining the composite building as an archive and nexus of identities, politics, architectural and industrial genealogies reveal the entangled histories of buildings and the environmental crises of water and land scarcity in Hong Kong.
