Abstract

Purpose

To design a new CAD/CAM technique to accurately transfer the simulation planning of mandiubular reconstruction to real surgery.

Materials and methods

First, we designed triple-template-method of computer assisted mandiubular reconstruction by defining mandibulectomyfibula cutting and positioning. Then, we tested the accuracy of this method by cadaveric surgery. Finally, we applied this method in four patients who required mandibular resection and immediate reconstruction.

Results

Cadaveric surgery showed that the triple template method can accurately transfer the simulation planning to the real surgery. In the patient oriented study, the reconstructed mandibles presented high similarity to the surgical planning. Postoperative facial appearance and occlusal relationship were satisfying (Figs. 1–4).

Conclusions

The method of defining the tumor resection, fibula cutting and positioning by surgical templates was accurate enough for mandible reconstruction surgery.
