Abstract | With the development of the feminist movement and theory, gender issues have
been receiving increasing attention. In this context, Yang Li took the stage of tucao
dahui 吐槽大会"Roast" and Tuokouxiu dahui 脱口秀大会"Rock&Roast" and
presented a series of stand-up comedy routines centered around gender topics. Her
content and language style are special, and certain segments have sparked considerable
controversy, leading to widespread discussions. Audience opinions are divided, with
some considering her efforts as a means to advocate for women's rights, while others
suspect that she might exploit gender issues for commercial gains.
This article adopts a comprehensive approach, including case study, content
analysis, and discourse analysis, to transcribe the relevant video clips of Yang Li from
Tencent Video . The paper examines gender issues reflected from a female perspective,
explores the main strategies of text construction to better understand the generation of
controversies. Furthermore, the paper reflects on the progress and shortcomings of her
gender-related topics. The research indicates that Yang Li adopts a social gender
perspective and to some extent criticizes the legitimacy of traditional patriarchal
systems, drawing attention to the marginalized, stereotyped, stigmatized, and
objectified women, which deserves recognition. However, it is important to note that
she represents rather than reenacts women. Driven by commercial values and catering
to a predominantly young female audience, she frequently employs gender conceptual
terms, metaphorical expressions, repetitive language, and modal expressions, leading
to relatively extreme gender perspectives. As a result, gender conflicts are not fully
resolved; instead, they are intensified, perpetuating gender dichotomies and reinforcing
gender stereotypes, causing controversies.
