AbstractLove After Love, which debuted in 2020, is veteran Hong Kong director Ann Hui’s third film adaptation of Eileen Chang’s novels. The first chapter of this paper reviews books and articles related to Ann Hui and Eileen Chang, states different types of adaptation, and summarizes Ann Hui’s re-occurring themes and views on adaptation. The second chapter compares Eileen Chang’s Aloeswood Incense: The First Brazier and Ann Hui’s Love After Love, in terms of the opening and ending, scenes, imageries, and plots. The third chapter explores the themes of Love After Love through the evidence from the previous analysis, including the destiny of females, humanistic concern, and Hong Kong consciousness. The fourth chapter concludes that Ann Hui incorporates her distinctive style into the film.
