AbstractA radical interaction has been employed as the recognition motif in the template-directed synthesis of a [2]rotaxane composed of cyclobis(paraquat-p- phenylene) and a viologen derivative. The ruthenium tris(bipyridine)/ triethanolamine system is used as the electron-transfer photocatalyst to generate the necessary radical cation components that result in the formation of an inclusion complex. A stoppering reaction follows to form the mechanical bond. © 2010 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.
