Abstract | Both mass spectrometry and X-ray crystallography indicate the formation of discrete dimeric superstructures. Although the 1H NMR spectroscopic data is not so easy to interpret, there is no doubt that the monomer 1-H+ aggregates to generate higher order superstructures, possibly trimers and other higher oligomers that may be cyclic or acyclic in nature. The elucidation of these superstructures is being pursued actively in hope that the `stoppering' of such species will lead to a unique class of mechanically-interlocked polymers. |
