AbstractVegetation-sequencing batch bioreactor (V-SBR) process is an environment-friendly ecological hybrid system for decentralized wastewater treatment. Contrary to conventional activated sludge process, V-SBR has its own merits, including a good landscaping capability, a stably high removal effectiveness and a minimal impact on ambient environments. Moreover, its easy-manipulation and high cost-effectiveness make V-SBR suitable for decentralized wastewater treatment. In the present work, treatment efficiency and sludge properties of V-SBR process were investigated, and more attention was paid to sludge characteristics, including sludge dewaterability, settleability, sludge concentration, particle size distribution, EPS, SMP, and their transformation profiles were examined and analyzed. The results obtained is very important to understand V-SBR process and to give direct technical evidences for its practical application.
