AbstractThis paper studies the placemaking strategy of the Central Market revitalization project and evaluates how it is reused for public enjoyment with the feedback of visitors. With the incident demolition of the Star Ferry Pier in 2006, the public gradually discovered some historical buildings that were not noticed in the past are containing the collective memories of the citizens. The awareness of heritage conservation in Hong Kong has gradually raised since then. In the Central Market revitalization project, several placemaking strategies are adopted, including strategic placemaking, creative placemaking and tactical placemaking. It makes the place become more attractive for people to visit, enjoy and explore it. The new Central Market Building now provides a diversified leisure space and public space with greenery for public enjoyment. In addition, the operation model is focusing on providing affordable goods and services to the general public. Data collection including a questionnaire for obtaining the feedback of visitors and second-hand data of news reports regarding the Central Market was conducted for evaluating its placemaking strategy. In general, the revitalization project is not only preserving the physical structure but also creating a new public space for daily enjoyment. There some feature designs and planning are incorporated into the new building, making the place more unique and attractive. The pop-up events and activities provide novelty to visitors so as to attract them to come to the Central Market again.
