AbstractRegeneration of dental and periodontal tissues is the interest of many past and current studies. Esthetic and functional rehabilitation of tooth and its periodontium is the main goal of the tissue engineering and regeneration approaches. Many attempts have been made to preserve or revitalize the pulp tissue; however, the field is still evolving. Furthermore, the restoration of the complexity of periodontal structures and their interfaces is very challenging. Different types of nondegradable/biodegradable biomaterials, signaling molecules, and stem cells are being investigated for dental and periodontal tissue engineering. More recently, gene and cell therapy, nanotechnology, and 3D printing techniques have been developed with promising outcomes. All over, the era is still growing as different biomaterials and technologies are being introduced. The development of customized, smart and functional biomaterials for effective restoration of pulp vitality and regeneration of periodontium would be the ultimate target of future dentistry.
