AbstractThis chapter introduces the main remote sensing data products and their applications in land surface data assimilation systems. Section 1.1 summarizes the basic concept of data assimilation and the importance of remotely sensed data for data assimilation; Sec. 1.2 describes the forcing data products (radiation, air temperature, water vapor, etc.) of land surface models (LSMs) in data assimilation systems; Sec. 1.3 introduces the land surface remote sensing data products and application for data assimilation; Sec. 1.4 describes the land cover types products for parameterization of the model and Sec. 1.5 is a summary of this chapter.
