AbstractWe investigate a novel design of negative index metamaterial modulator for optical communication. Numerical studies indicate a strong modulation of fiber-guided optical signal, when the resonance frequency of the metamaterial is detuned with optical excitation. Experimental observation verifies simulation results, that shows the good potential for on-fiber small footprint modulator. © 2009 Optical Society of America.
