Abstract | Urban renewal has been implemented in Hong Kong over the past decades. It aims to improve the living conditions of old urban areas, enhance environmental quality, provide more community facilities and preserve local cultures. It is a complex process, which to be effective, requires the appropriate planning of different perspectives and cooperation of various stakeholders. This dissertation aims at identifying the impact of redevelopment projects on resident satisfaction in the neighbourhood.
To evaluate the impact, relevant factors affecting resident satisfaction and their correlation with satisfaction are first identified, followed by the analysis of case studies of three redevelopment projects by literature reviews and interviews. The findings show that the redevelopment projects are highly effective to improve physical and environmental conditions of the areas, but there are different social impact and infrastructure establishment in each redevelopment project. The studies also identify the inefficiency and ineffectiveness of public participation, and the impact of development scale on the effectiveness of urban renewal.
According to the results of analysis, there are several recommendations, such as the implementation of stakeholders-led urban renewal, enhancement of the concepts of liveability and sustainability, use of geographic information system in planning and the adoption of rehabilitation, to improve the resident satisfaction in the neighbourhood and the effectiveness of urban renewal.
