| Abstract | In most industries, existing firms must train enough managers to staff existing plants, and new plants of new and existing firms. So firms produce and sell output to consumers, and managers to themselves. This paper studies the creation of plants and firms in the above environment. It presents a new branching model of firm growth. Cross-section and dynamic characterizations of plants and firms are presented and shown to be consistent with evidence from the US chemical industry. |
