Abstract | Wang Ao (1449–1524) was a distinguished scholar, great statesman and major provider of literati and artistic patronage in mid-Ming dynasty Suzhou. This paper examines key aspects of both his own personal literati activities and those that he sponsored, to discern two major trends. Wang Ao was determined to aggrandise his own family and to promote the cultural legacy of the ancient kingdom of Wu which once had its capital in Suzhou. His patronage was demonstrably geared towards artists and scholars who shared his interest in antiquity. © 2009, Maney Publishing. |
