AbstractWe developed a contour-aware 3D medical image registration (CA3D-MIR) pipeline to exploit the contour shape for fast and accurate registration of two 3D medical images from different imaging modalities. Our method automatically extracts the object contour points with the proposed convex hull erosion algorithm to generate point clouds. Then, an improved slice-based iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm is performed to obtain the registration parameters. Experimental results show that our method reduces the time and the registration error compared with the traditional ICP method. Clinical Relevance— This paper provides a method to register 3D medical images with variance resolutions.
