AbstractBreast cancer is one of the commonest cancers in females worldwide. Conventional surgical treatment for breast cancer includes mastectomy or breast conserving surgery, with or without axillary surgery. Unlike conventional breast cancer surgery, cryosurgery is a percutaneous ablative procedure. It is minimally invasive and could be an alternative to surgical excision of breast cancer. The treatment effect of cryosurgery has been shown in both animal studies and clinical trials. Advantages of cryosurgery include better cosmetic outcome, lower post-operative pain, low morbidity, cost-effectiveness. Several on-going international trials are currently underway to evaluate the long-term oncologic outcome of cryosurgery in early breast cancers. Preliminary results were promising.
