Comparison of pronunciation in the Taiwan and Quanzhou Southern Min varieties = 台灣閩南語與泉州閩南語的語音比較

Abstract

From the perspective of phonetic research, the essay compares two descriptions of southern min varieties which are two closely related dialects called Taiwan southern min varieties and Quanzhou southern min varieties. This study will combine qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis. The qualitative analysis will be conducted through auditory impression. After the analysis, the results shows that there are many differences in pronunciation and using words between Taiwan southern min varieties and Quanzhou southern min varieties. On the other hand, the quantitative analysis will adopt the praat phonetics software as the media to measure the pronunciation, and to compare the differences between the two types of . southern min varieties. After the analysis, the data of the test shows various characteristics of each dialect. First of all, there is a longer end-of-sentence lengthening effect in Taiwan southern min varieties. Secondly, the proportion of modal particles used in Taiwan southern min varieties is higher than that in Quanzhou southern min varieties, and the tone duration of sentence final particle in Taiwan southern min varieties is longer than that in Quanzhou southern min varieties. Even if there is no sentence final particle, the duration of the last pronunciation in Taiwan southern min varieties is longer than that Quanzhou southern min varieties. Last, using sentence final particle does not alter the fact that End-of-sentence prolongation effect in Taiwan southern min varieties is greater than that in Quanzhou southern min varieties Therefore, there are differences in the prosodic characteristics between Taiwan southern min varieties and Quanzhou southern min varieties.
