Ten years of experience in intraoperative angiogram for intracranial vascular malformations

Abstract

Objective: To review the utility of performing intraoperative angiogram in treating intracranial vascular malformations. Method: Retrospective review of all patients who underwent open resection of intracranial vascular malformations in Queen Mary Hospital from 2011-2020 which mainly included arteriovenous malformation and arteriovenous fistulas. Patient list was retrieved from the departmental database. The primary outcomes were recurrence, complication rate and functional outcome at 6 months. Patient who underwent surgery with and without intraoperative angiogram were compared and their outcome were analyzed for statistical significance. Result: Preliminary analysis suggested that intraoperative angiogram is associated with lower recurrence rate (0% vs 17%, p=0.01). The incidence of complication attributed to intraoperative angiogram is also low (0%). Conclusion: Preliminary analysis suggested that intraoperative angiogram is safe and effective.
