AbstractBumthang, a language of central Bhutan, participates in many of the Himalayan areal norms with respect to case marking, including an ergative case that is not categorial in usage, and which can appear with some intransitive predicates. This talk reports on new work based on judgement tasks and a corpus derived from naturalistic recordings. We first review the use of the ergative case in Ura dialect of Bumthang which relies heavily on semantics, pragmatics, as well as syntax to understand its usage. In this presentation we examine the use of ergative case in texts, examining both actual occurrences, and possible occurrences, to determine which discourse factors are also relevant in addition to the sentence-internal factors, examining both quantitative and qualitative effects on the appearance and use of case marking.
