Abstract | A linear stability analysis is used to investigate the effect of stresses in the interface diffusion controlled morphological stability of plate-like lamellar and rod-like fibrous eutectic microstructures. These stresses can either be due to misfit strains or externally applied loads. Misfit strains can either counteract or enhance the destabilizing influence of applied loads, depending on the elasticity of the plate and the matrix, and the volume fraction of the two phases. On the other hand, stresses generated by externally applied loads lead to a decrease in the instability wavelength. Stability diagrams are presented identifying the material properties and conditions required to maintain a stable interface in the two eutectic microstructures. |
