AbstractIn order for grain boundary fracture to occur a) a sharp crack must be stable and b) the critical stress intensity factor for boundary failure must be achieved prior to bulk yielding. The latter is determined by a balance between grain boundary cohesion and yield strength. Employing these considerations, we are able to reconcile the existing experimental data on the fracture behavior of polycrystalline Ni3Al. A quantitative analysis of the details of this model will be published elsewhere. © 1986.
