| Abstract | This chapter posits that public space is the soul of a city, and it defines the essence of urbanity. Public space reflects the quality of life and the characteristics of its city and the people. It also provides the lens for analyzing the political economy of a high-density city like Hong Kong. This chapter illustrates how the planning, design and provision of urban open space are subject not only to the influences of changing political, social and economic forces but also to the development trajectory of the city that progresses from industrial capitalism to global capitalism. It will explore the emerging trends of public space provision and management in this city and will advocate the importance of urban planning in mitigating some undesirable consequences. |
