Abstract | Aim The aim of this project was to investigate the perception of chromatic esthetics of teeth and experiences of tooth whitening among Hong Kong adults.
Methods A quota non-probability sampling was adopted through face-to-face street interview in proportionate to sizes of the subpopulations among different age groups and districts in Hong Kong. Perception and satisfaction of respondents’ tooth colour, attitudes and experiences towards tooth whitening products and services were assessed using a self-reported questionnaire. Chi-square and multivariable logistic regression analysis were adopted.
Results Four hundred and thirty-seven Hong Kong adults participated in the survey. Results showed that around half (49.9%) of the respondents were unsatisfied with their current shades, among which three-quarters (75.7%) of them looked forward to whiter tooth shades. More than two-thirds (61.8%) admitted that they had considered having tooth whitening. A higher perceived need towards tooth whitening was found to be significantly associated with younger age (p<0.001) and female (p=0.014). Yet, about one-third (67.3%) of the interviewees reported experience in tooth whitening. Among the various tooth whitening products, whitening toothpaste was the most popular choice. The experiences in having tooth whitening, were significantly related to the age (p=0.047) and gender (p<0.001). Among various tooth whitening choices, the respondents preferred OTC products (78.9%) to professional bleaching services (57.8%), in which prices and safety were the most important determinants for using OTC products and professional bleaching services, respectively.
Conclusion Around half of Hong Kong adults are dissatisfied with their own tooth colour and two-thirds of them have a desire towards possessing whiter teeth. The perceived need and experience of tooth whitening are significantly higher among female and younger age groups. Tooth whitening toothpaste is the most popular choice. Hong Kong adults prefer OTC tooth whitening products to professional bleaching services. |
