AbstractA phytocosmetics is regarded as not effective unless it is suitably delivered to the targeted skin site for its beauty functions. This chapter aims to provide an overview of a formulator's journey in how to choose suitable phytocosmetic delivery technology, using naturally occurring resveratrol as an illustration. First, background information of the phytocosmetic active should be mapped, with an understanding in its physicochemical properties, and clinical and safety data. Second, whenever possible, delivery system should be kept simple, as cost control is the current trend. Various traditional forms, such as solution, cream, ointment, and gel are described and compared. Third, if the routine delivery technologies are not satisfactory, advanced delivery methods can be considered, including micellar systems (e.g., micro- and nano-emulsions), vesicular systems (e.g., liposome and other “-osomes”), and particulate systems (e.g., micro- and nano-particles). Pros and cons are also discussed. Finally, the authors' impressions of future prospects in phytocosmetic delivery are discussed, proposing that the immediate trends for formulators are platform technology development in personalized phytocosmetics, and stability enhancement of phytocosmetics due to rising needs of e-commerce and cross-border supply chain.
