Abstract	Far from being a modern phenomenon, attempts to green the city of Hong Kong stretch back almost to the beginning of the colonial period. Through detailed research of early Hong Kong documentary and photographic archives, this research study has pieced together the intriguing history of the colonial government’s first efforts to green the ‘Barren Rock’. The extensive planting of trees in the first few years helped to define and order life in the city, and to bring a welcome sense of the natural into the streets.
