AbstractThe unique high rise high density form of Hong Kong is an extreme condition in which to test theories of sustainable urban development. In some of the most extreme urban living conditions, it is surprising to find a population that not only outlives the rest of the world, but enjoys a high standard of living, a green and healthy environment, unparalleled levels of infrastructural efficiency, strong family values and multicultural community structures, financial wealth, and stable government. This presentation examines the nature of Hong Kong and its own particular form of sustainability, and discusses both the successes and some of the hidden costs.
