AbstractObjectives: To investigate family caregivers’ intention and actual behaviors of nursing home application for people with dementia. Methods: Mixed method study of quantitative structured interview with 150 caregivers of people with dementia using community care service (CCS), and qualitative in-depth interview with 50 caregivers of people with dementia recently admitted to a nursing home. We explored the contribution of sociodemographic factors, primary and secondary stressors, and resources to the intention and actual behavior of nursing home application. Results: Preliminary analysis of 70 caregivers using CCS showed that having a domestic helper, lower depression, and better self-perceived health were significantly related to wish of nursing home application, whereas daily living functioning of the person with dementia were related to actual application. Preliminary qualitative data from 5 caregivers revealed pragmatic considerations related to the nursing home application procedures in Hong Kong that affect their wish and actual behavior of nursing home placement.
