Abstract報四恩的思想是中國佛教與受中國佛教影響的東亞佛教特有的教義與實踐，它是中國佛教徒在吸收了印度大乘佛教思想和中國儒家思想之後改造而成的。所以報四恩的思想與實踐在南傳佛教和藏傳佛教都沒有。報四恩的思想主要來源於般若流支傳譯的《正法念處經》和唐代般若譯出的《大乘本生心地觀經》與《諸佛境界攝真實經》，但是《大乘本生心地觀經》所講的四恩：一父母 恩，二眾生恩，三國王恩，四三寶恩成了報四恩的主要內容。其中最受觀注的是「國王恩」，因為中國的文化情形與印度不同，在中國王或皇帝是至高無上，報國王恩的思想緩和了佛教僧團與皇權之間的衝突。
