Retrospective review of 10 year experience in a single center: outcome of extra cranial and intra cranial bypass followed by tumor resection in advanced head and neck malignancy

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to investigate the outcome of patients who had advanced head and neck cancers with carotid artery involvement, underwent extra cranial-intra cranial bypass followed by aggressive tumor resection. Method: This was a ten-year (from 2010 to 2019) retrospective review of the survival outcomes in 46 patients with recurrent head and neck tumor underwent 2 stage operation ie ECIC bypass followed by tumor resection in Queen Mary Hospital. Surgical complication, survival outcome, ECOG score in 1 year and 2 year, and disease free survival were evaluated. Result: This study included 46 patients, (34 male and 12 female) with mean age 65 years old (range, 35-72) .33 of them had nasopharyngeal tumor (NPC) while 13 had non NPC. 2 patients died from early post operative complications. 14 patients treated for cure have been followed up for more than 2 years and 18 patients survived more than 1 year. 7 patients lost follow up after discharge.
