AbstractJinan Beer Factory is located in Tianqiao(天桥)District in Jinan. It is a representative industrial heritage site of 1960s. It was adaptively reused in 2013 and was the only completed conservation case in Jinan. The author lives in Tianqiao District in Jinan and attaches great importance to industrial heritage conservation work in Jinan. Jinan, which is the capital city of Shandong Province, is an important industrial centre of Mainland China since Qing Dynasty. Furthermore, Tianqiao District played an important role in the whole industrial developing process of Jinan. Most existing industrial heritage sites in Tianqiao District are in the form of factory. There are 23 declared industrial heritage sites in Jinan, and the distribution of them are as follows (see Figure 1). According to the government document, 11 industrial heritage sites are still abandoned now out of those 23 declared industrial heritage sites. However, among those heritage sites, Jinan Beer Factory is the only completed conservation project of industrial heritage in Jinan. It is located in Tianqiao District of Jinan. After being abandoned for nearly 4 years, it was finally adaptively reused in 2013. The condition of industrial heritage sites in Jinan is depressing. It is a pity to see so many meaningful heritage sites being abandoned or even to be demolished. With so many precious industrial heritage sites being abandoned in China, the main issue is to figure out whether Jinan Beer Factory Conservation Project is sustainable under the current context of mainland China from the environmental, economic and social aspects and its feasibility to be a model for other adaptive reuse projects of industrial heritage. This dissertation is going to provide adaptive reuse recommendations based on assessment of sustainability of Jinan Beer Factory Conservation Project and case studies of other successful industrial revitalization projects.
