A historical study of Bishop Hall Jubilee School = 何明華會督銀禧中學的歷史研究

Abstract

The thesis examines the history of Bishop Hall Jubilee School, which was founded in 1961, in memory of the Silver Jubilee of Reverend Ronald Owen Hall becoming the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Hong Kong. In the review of past researches, quite a lot of studies were done on the life, thoughts of Bishop Hall and his relationship with Hong Kong and Mainland China. However, very few of them have focused on the educational contribution of Bishop Hall despite its importance on passing the torch and ideas of him to the next generation. Bishop Hall Jubilee School, as a secondary school with 58-year history, is seen to a certain extent having kept some of the thoughts of Bishop Hall, but also has its own evolution after the reform of various principals. The thesis would examine the direction of the school development in different aspects throughout the years, so as to explore several issues, e.g. how far the school has preserved the idea of Bishop Hall and in what way the Hong Kong Anglican Church has changed its role in missionary work in the school. The research is using the information and findings of recent and past interviews with the principals, alumni and students of the school, school magazines and newspapers, being the main historical resources in investigating the features and development of the school in 5 different stages and analyzing how the thoughts of Bishop Hall is being preserved, developed and passed on.
