| Abstract | Hong Kong is a trilingual city with people commonly speaking Cantonese, English and Putonghua. At the university level, while most of the local students have attained a certain level of proficiency in these three languages, the foreign students generally do not have enough exposure to Cantonese and hence are not able to master the language as well. In view of this, The University of Hong Kong offers credit-bearing Cantonese courses for non-local students, enable them to learn Cantonese in the university. This article gives a brief introduction on the curriculum design of Cantonese courses offered by HKU, and discusses how the Cantonese courses can be adapted to the local context as well as the needs of foreign students. |
