AbstractIn this study, we explore the contingent role that the small work networks play in firm performance, arguing that firms may have various benefits in small world networks, depending on their internal resources and external network ties connected particularly to the focal firm. Using a sample of U.S. venture capital firms from 1995-2003, we find that the curvilinear effect found in previous literature varies in firms with different resources and capabilities and in firms with different egocentric network structures. We discuss the implications of these results for the firm performance and interfirm network literatures.
