AbstractThis study aimed to investigate the effect of phonological neighbourhood density on Cantonese word production. Picture naming was used as the task to elicit single word production among participants (N = 22) aged 20-25. Both behavioural data (naming accuracy and naming latency) and EEG data (peak latency, peak amplitude and mean amplitude of ERP components) were analysed. Results showed significant facilitative effects on naming latency, and speed and easiness of cognitive processing; but an inhibitory effect on naming accuracy. Though further study should be done to confirm the lexical competition being induced by words from denser phonological neighbourhoods, this study suggests the importance of a density effect in word production.
