AbstractExplanations are commonly involved in communication. However, little is known about the development of explanatory ability in the Cantonese population. This study investigated the performance of Cantonese speaking adults and preschoolers in (1) providing adequate explanation for physical and psychological causalities, (2) providing intentional explanation, (3) the distribution of error patterns among inadequate explanations and (4) the preference on causal connectives. Twenty-nine adults, 27 preschoolers in K2 class and 30 preschoolers in K3 class participated in the study. The study made use of question and answer task and sentence completion task to elicit explanation responses. Results showed participants from all age groups provided significantly more adequate explanations for physical causality than that for psychological causality. The preschoolers were less capable than the adults in giving intentional explanations. For inadequate explanations, preschoolers produced significantly larger proportion of explanations that are irrelevant to the story content when compared to that of adults. In terms of causal connectives usage, all age groups demonstrated preference on using ‘jan1 wai6’ (because). Findings suggested that Cantonese speaking preschoolers are able to meet the linguistic demands in giving explanations. The discrepancy in explanatory skills of preschoolers from adults is discussed with reference to cognitive demands, specifically on perspective taking abilities.
